India Sees Record Growth in Intellectual Property Filings in 2024‑25

The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) has released the IP India Annual Report for 2024–25, recording a substantial increase in intellectual property filings across all categories. Total filings reached approximately 7.5 lakh, reflecting nearly 20% growth over the previous year. Trademark filings constituted the largest share with over 5.5 lakh applications, while patent filings crossed 1.1 lakh, of which domestic applicants accounted for nearly 62%. Design applications rose to approximately 43,000, copyright registrations reached 44,095, and Geographical Indications (GIs) totalled 275.

The report highlights strengthened institutional capacity to manage rising filings. CGPDTM recruited 407 new patent examiners and 200 new trademark registry staff, improving examination speed and reducing pendency. Digital initiatives such as AI-enabled trademark search, the IP Saarthi chatbot, and the public-facing IP Dashboard were also introduced to enhance transparency, accessibility, and user experience.

Operational performance also improved, with more patents, trademarks, and designs examined and registered than in the previous year. India’s international engagement continued, with active participation in treaties such as Locarno, Vienna, and GRATK, reflecting its growing role in the global IP landscape.
