Draft Guidelines for Examination of Computer-Related Inventions (CRI) Released for Public Consultation (Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks, March 25, 2025)

The Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs, and Trade Marks (CGPDTM) released the Draft CRI Guidelines, 2025 on March 25, 2025. The Draft aims to provide clarity on the assessment of computer-related inventions in India, taking into consideration the advancement of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, etc. The guidelines also address aspects such as the definition of ‘algorithm’ the scope of patent protection for AI-driven innovations, and analysing patentable and non-patentable claims in CRI applications. CGPDTM invites comments and suggestions on the Draft CRI Gudelines, 2025 by April 15, 2025.
