On May 6, 2025, the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, and the Hon’ble Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Sir Keir Starmer announced the successful conclusion of a mutually beneficial India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). One of the key highlights of the FTA is its focus on intellectual property rights regime. In the IP chapter of the FTA, India has committed to streamlining its patent procedures by reducing administrative burdens and expediting processes. The FTA also paves the way for cooperation on copyright and related rights, with India agreeing to examine aspects such as public performance rights and artist’s resale rights, and to undertake an internal review of its copyright terms of protection. In addition to assessing the patents and copyright systems, India will also provide United Kingdom with the highest level of protection for United Kingdom’s geographical indications (GIs), broadening the scope beyond wines and spirits.
